Brosseau Creativity Awards, Spencer Museum of Art
Deadline: Thursday, March 13, 2014, 4PM
http://www.spencerart.ku.edu/education/university/awards/brosseau.shtml
Awarded by the Spencer Museum of Art (SMA), The Jack and Lavon Brosseau Creativity Awards recognize outstanding creativity and originality by University of Kansas undergraduate students. These awards celebrate undergraduate students at the University of Kansas who engage in creative scholarly work in any discipline. Collaborative work is especially encouraged, in line with the Museum’s commitment to bring together diverse people and ideas around a central topic or object.
These awards form part of the SMA mission to strengthen, support, and contribute to the academic research and teaching at KU, as well as to foster interdisciplinary exploration at the intersection of art, ideas, and experience. The Spencer’s contemporary vision is to present its collection as a living archive that motivates creative work, object-centered research and teaching, and transformative public dialogue.
Lavon Brosseau, from Concordia, Kansas, believes in education and in the profound importance of teaching. The generosity of others made a college education a reality for her, and she wants to return the favor by establishing this award. Brosseau states, “There is a deep and almost sacred beauty in literature and in art. Each may deal with the abstract and each may involve interpretation, but each has its own reality that permits the mind to explore and to soar.”
Two Brosseau Creativity Awards will be given, one each in the categories of writing and multimedia. The categories have deliberately been defined in very broad terms, in order to encourage a wide range of submissions from the full spectrum of academic pursuits. The best creative work in any field evidences risk-taking and reflection, provides new insights, forms a part of critical thinking, and generatesnew ways of understanding.
Submissions to both categories are due Friday, March 15, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. The awardees for each category will receive a cash prize of approximately $500. The selected projects may be considered for publication in The Register, the scholarly journal of the Spencer Museum of Art.

KU Undergraduate Research Award
Deadline: November 13, 2013
http://www.ugresearch.ku.edu/student/fund/ugra
Undergraduate Research Awards (UGRAs) provide support for original, independent research, scholarship, or creative work by Lawrence-campus undergraduates, under the general guidance of a member of the faculty. Each UGRA proposal must be sponsored by a member of the faculty who has read and approved the proposal and who agrees to oversee the conduct and completion of the project. UGRAs are designed to support undergraduate students as independent investigators, though their research might also be associated with faculty research projects. For the purpose of this competition, "research" should not be construed too narrowly: creative works also qualify as research. UGRAs are for the support of independent projects that constitute work that is original and substantive given the standards and objectives of the field. (The UGRAs are not intended, for example, to support trips to workshops or the like; something new has to be discovered or created).
Awards and Dispersal:Awards- $1,000
You will receive your award through the Financial Aid distribution process. If you owe KU for any charges (e.g. tuition, required campus fees, etc.) this financial aid will be applied towards the amount due and if a credit balance is created within your account, the credit balance will be refunded to you. You will receive your check via direct deposit if signed up for this in Enroll & Pay. Otherwise, the Bursar’s Office will mail you a check. If you have questions about how this award may affect your Financial Aid, please contact Joan Weaver in the Financial Aid Office, 785-864-5478.
Award Periods:Awards for research conducted in the Fall of 2013 have been made. We are currently starting the application process for awards for research to be conducted in the Spring 2014 semester.
Important Dates for Spring 2014 Undergraduate Research Awards:
UGRA Information Session: October 9th, 2013, 4-5pm, Parlors ABC of Kansas Union
UGRA Information Session: October 23rd, 2013, 2-3pm, International Room of Kansas Union
UGRA Workshop: November 7th, 2013 4-5pm, English Room of Kansas Union
UGRA Proposal Deadline: November 13th, 2013 11:59 PM CST
Eligibility:To be eligible you must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student enrolled on the Lawrence campus. Students in any major can apply. You must be enrolled full-time during the semester when you receive the award, with the exception that students receiving summer awards need only be enrolled in one credit hour. Other exceptions to this rule can be made, e.g., when the applicant is studying abroad during the semester. If you think an exception should be made for you, or if you have questions about your eligibility, contact the Center for Undergraduate Research at [email protected].
Selection Criteria:UGRAs are awarded on the merit of the applicant's proposal as judged by a faculty reviewer, the applicant's academic record, and the recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with the applicant and the proposed project. Recipients will be selected by Center staff based on all of these components of the application. Applicants will be informed of award decisions by the end of the Fall semester.
