Solo exhibitors have included local, regional, and national artists from as far away as New York City and San Francisco. It is important that each of our seasons of free public exhibits consist of a balanced mix of solo and group thematic projects. The group shows provide diversity of approach, media, style, and geographic origin, while the solo exhibits provide a deeper insight into one artist's vision. Well over 100 artists exhibit, and more than 3000 patrons visit the gallery each year. Thousands of artists submit works to thematic projects produced at the gallery. And our exhibits are routinely reviewed in regional, and sometimes national, news and art publications. Manifest is eager to receive proposals of various types, including any genre or media, and accepts these on an ongoing basis, reviewing them starting in early June in consideration for the upcoming season. The organization and gallery is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit with a mission to stand for quality in the visual arts. We set our own bar high, and generally exceed the expectations of both the exhibiting artists and our patrons with our programming. All exhibit spaces are appropriately track-lit. The Main Gallery (the largest of the three) has street-facing windows nearly floor to ceiling providing excellent public exposure for the artwork 24/7. Exhibits are open to the public five hours a day, five days a week for a total of four weeks on view. Gallery assignments are decided by the curatorial staff when planning the season. Proposals may suggest a gallery, or indicate the need for a specific type of space. For example, our Parallel Space gallery can be made completely dark even during daytime. But exhibit size and location will be determined by the curatorial staff at the time of season planning. http://www.manifestgallery.org/textuality Not long after humanity began drawing, drawings evolved into writing. Pictures became symbols, abstraction blossomed, and language became visual. Two branches, sharing one root, carried forward people's ideas, feelings, and plans. The visual and the verbal arts shared the role of encapsulating civilization's data. And they continue to do so today, in so many wondrous and varied ways. TEXTUALITY is an exhibit that inquires into the overlap of these two branches, seeking examples of where the verbal is made visual, where language returns into image. Manifest continues its eighth season with a project intended to feature and explore works which incorporate text or letter forms. These may be in ways that are quite straightforward, or which are abstract, fragmented, or in other ways surprising or significantly processed away from recognition. Manifest is eager to see just how artists make work of any media or genre (painting, drawing, collage, photography, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, video, and non-traditional art, etc.) using text or letter forms as a significant element. Media: Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts genre and media, (including video, photography, sculpture, collage, design, sketching, illustration, etc.). The only limitation is that text or letter forms must be incorporated as a primary element in the realization of the work. Eligibility: TEXTUALITY is open to everyone. This month-long festival has proudly served fine art and culture to the South Texas Region for over 30 years. This year's events focus on the expansive realm of Printmaking. AWARDS: Merit, Purchase and Materials Awards totaling over $2500 will be announced by the jurors during the closing reception on Thursday, April 26th 2012. In its second year, the exhibition has expanded eligibility to include artists living or working within 200 miles of Omaha, NE. The Bemis Center launched this exhibition to highlight new talent and perspectives and to establish new connections across contemporary art practices within the region. Any accepted work that differs from the digital image will be disqualified. The Bemis Center may reproduce accepted works for publicity, documentation, and promotion of the exhibition. All accepted works must remain at the Bemis Center until the close of the exhibition. Three of the selected artists to the exhibition will be awarded a Juror’s prize of $500. Each recipient of the Juror’s prize will also be offered the opportunity to exhibit work in the Bemis Underground’s 2013 Exhibition Program. All accepted artists should deliver all work to the Bemis Underground no later than 4pm on Saturday, February 18. The opening reception will occur on the evening of Friday, March 2 from 6-9pm. A gallery talk with the juror will take place at noon on March 3 in the Bemis Underground Gallery. About the Juror Shannon Stratton is a founder and current Executive and Creative Director of threewalls Chicago, a not-for-profit residency and exhibition space. Founded in 2003, threewalls has grown from a start-up exhibition space to a vital visual arts organization that supports contemporary visual arts in Chicago through solo exhibitions for regional artists, residencies, grants to artists, publications, conferences and commissioning programs. Founded on the mission of better supporting visual arts in Chicago, threewalls aims to provide a stable base of support to extensive community of artists who call Chicago and greater Illinois home. Programmed in collaboration with a rotating committee of local artists, threewalls was modeled after the classic Canadian artist-run-center model, a program that Stratton was inspired by growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Stratton's background is both in studio practice and art history, theory and criticism with a focus in craft practice and artist-run administration. Her writing on contemporary craft, fiber art and exhibitions has been published by Berg Publishing and Ronsdale Press as well as university galleries, art centers, commercial galleries and magazines throughout the US and Canada. With Green Lantern Press she founded and published (via threewalls) PHONEBOOK, a guide to contemporary independent and artist-run projects, now in its third volume, and The Artists Run Chicago Digest, a companion, appraisal and extension to the exhibition of the same name at The Hyde Park Center. She is currently working with Chicago based Golden Age on the forthcoming edited volume Making Meaning, a series of texts and projects around contemporary ideas of craft. In 2010 Stratton was named one of the top 5 most vital people in the visual arts in Chicago by NewCity. She was a 2011 fellow of the NAMAC Visual Arts Leadership Institute and a finalist for the Chicago Community Trust Emerging Leader Award. The goal of the INDA is to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, diverse, and relevant works of current drawing from around the world. As a carefully designed and crafted book, the INDA series enables Manifest (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) to assemble a wide array of works of drawing by international artists, without the limitation of physical availability, gallery space, or shipping logistics. With this, Manifest leverages its considerable experience in publication design specifically for works of art, with a high level of sensitivity to the artist's point of view. Like all competitive Manifest projects, the INDA is juried by a carefully selected and well-qualified ten-person panel of academic and professional advisers. Note that the INDA project is open to broad interpretations of just what qualifies as 'drawing'. The SNAG Educational Endowment was founded in 1992. Its sole focus is awarding graduate and undergraduate educational scholarships each year. These are our most prestigious and highly competitive student scholarship awards. A selection committee of three independent jurors determines the awards. Three scholarships are given annually. Undergraduate and graduate students are juried separately, and at least one award goes to an undergraduate each year. As a direct result of the tremendous success of the Raffle for our Educational Endowment, SNAG's board has increased the amounts of the Educational Endowment Scholarships. Beginning in 2011, there will be three tiers of awards: one for $2,000, one for $1,500, and the third at $1,000. In addition to the scholarship money, each recipient also receives:
SNAG actively fundraises to increase the Educational Endowment trust. A raffle is held at the SNAG conference, with the proceeds going to the Endowment. Hoover & Strong Scholarship Hoover & Strong has created a new $3,000 student scholarship that will be administered through SNAG's Educational Endowment Trust. The scholarship will be awarded each year to one graduate student creating high-quality production jewelry. It will be called the Hoover & Strong Scholarship, and the first award will be given in 2011. The annual application deadline for this scholarship is March 15, the same deadline as the other Educational Endowment Scholarship.
