DEADLINE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2012
http://www.lawrence.lib.ks.us/2012/08/calling-all-artists/ Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual national event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, BBW highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the dangers of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books throughout the United States. Libraries across the country recognize this week in a number of ways. For 2012, Lawrence Public Library (LPL), in partnership with the Lawrence Arts Center (LAC), is celebrating intellectual freedom and BBW in a totally unique way. We are asking local artists to create small scale works of art inspired by a banned/challenged book or author. Seven of these works will be selected and printed as trading cards, with the artwork on the front and a list of “statistics” about the highlighted book or author on the back, as well as information about the artist. All entries will be displayed during BBW and cards will be printed, with one given away each day of the week at both LPL and LAC. "The Lawrence Arts Center offers short-term residencies to support, sustain, and foster growth in local arts and artists, and help local artists to create works competitive on a national scale. We are currently accepting applications for 2011-2012 residencies."
