SOTA Student Travel Fund

2/3/2015

Deadline: Friday, February 13, 2015, 5PM
http://sota.ku.edu/student-travel-fund

The University of Kansas School of the Arts provides travel funds to support the professional development of its students and to increase the visibility of its academic programs. Applicants should note that funding priority will be given to students who were selected to participate in professional programs, conferences and events on the basis of a peer review of their work (portfolio, audition tape, written proposal, etc.). Applicants may only receive funding once per academic year (fall, spring, summer). There are three options for student travel funding:

Option 1: Up to $2501 may be awarded to students who attend regional or national professional conferences directly related to their area of study. Students attending conferences as a group must still apply to Student Travel Fund individually.

Option 2: Up to $5001 may be awarded for the following activities:

  • 1. Support for students to participate in regional, national or international conferences where they are performing or presenting papers, workshops, poster sessions, or other work.
  • 2. Students invited to perform, present, or exhibit at other regional, national, or international venues related to their area of study.
  • 3. Students attending a national conference when serving as elected officers of a related regional or national organization.
Option 3: Up to $7501 may be awarded for travel expenses when studying in programs, organizations, and institutes beyond the KU campus leading to professional development in the arts. This component of the fund is highly competitive with a limited number of awards made each year. Travel for study might include:

  • 1. Travel within the United States to participate in master classes, workshops, or residencies as appropriate within the arts disciplines in the School of the Arts.
  • 2. Travel outside the United States in study abroad programs lead by KU faculty.
1Depends on available funding

Note: This fund does not cover participation in study programs such as internships or other travel activities undertaken as part of non-study abroad courses.

KU Undergraduate Research Symposium Cover Art Contest

2/3/2015

Deadline: February 27, 2015, Noon
http://ugresearch.ku.edu/student/share/symposium/cover-contest

The Center for Undergraduate Research is soliciting artwork for the cover of the program for the 18th annualUndergraduate Research Symposium to be held at KU on April 25, 2015.  The design will appear on the program for the day’s events, as well as promotional materials associated with the Symposium.  The winner of the cover art competition will also receive $100.

The Center often uses the phrase “Claim your Curiosity” in marketing to students; the winning design will communicate this spirit of curiosity that is at the heart of undergraduate research. Your submission could include text (with the title of the event, etc.) as part of the design, or it could be a stand-alone image that we will then incorporate into a poster layout for our promotional purposes.

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event at KU that celebrates the diversity of undergraduate research and creative activities on campus.  Students present their research and creative scholarship to others in the Lawrence community.

Any undergraduate student at KU is eligible to participate in this competition.

Submissions for the cover design should be saved as an electronic document (pdf, jpg, png, etc.) and sent via the online submission form by noon on Friday, February 27th.  If you have any questions about the Cover Art Competition or the Undergraduate Research Symposium, contact us at cur@ku.edu.

Rolling Deadline
http://ugresearch.ku.edu/student/fund/travel-award

Undergraduate Travel Awards are offered to KU undergraduate students to defray the cost of travel to present results of their research or creative performance at a professional conference in their field.
  • Funds are dispersed until depleted, beginning with the academic year
  • Apply as soon as possible
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis around the 15th of each month with notification of results by the end of that month
  • All funds must be awarded by June 1 of each year—if your conference takes place over the summer, please be sure to apply early.
The Center receives funding for this program from the Student Senate's Equal Opportunity Fund(http://studentsenate.ku.edu) and the KU Office of Research (http://research.ku.edu/).

Eligibility
  • All full-time, currently enrolled undergraduate students in good academic standing are eligible to apply
  • The travel must occur while the student is still enrolled at KU
  • The conference to be attended must be considered a “professional conference” according to the Guidelines for Professional Conference Classification
  • We are not able to fund all applicants and preference will be given to students giving oral presentations (vs. posters) at national (vs. regional) discipline-based (vs. general) conferences who have sought or secured additional funding from other sources (vs. no reported attempts)

Awards and Dispersal
  • Successful applicants will receive $500 to help with the costs of transportation, lodging, and registration fees for the professional conference
  • This money will be posted to the student's account through the Financial Aid Office at the time that the student is notified that s/he has received a Travel Award
  • If you owe KU for any charges (e.g. tuition, required campus fees, etc.), this financial aid will be applied towards the amount due and if a credit balance is created within your account, the credit balance will be refunded to you
  • You will receive your check via direct deposit if signed up for this service in Enroll & Pay. Otherwise, the Bursar’s Office will mail you a check
  • If you have questions about how this award may affect your Financial Aid, please contact Joan Weaver in the Financial Aid Office, 785-864-5478.
Once the travel is completed, students are expected to fill out the travel award evaluation form, where they will be asked to submit an electronic copy of their poster or talk. If the student is unable to attend the conference to present his/her research after the Travel Award has already been distributed, s/he will be required to return the Travel Award money in full. Please see our guidelines for acknowledging support for information on formatting acknowledgments.

Guidelines for Professional Conference Classification
KU undergraduates are eligible to apply for funding from the Center for Undergraduate Research in order to present their original research at professional conferences. Please use the following guidelines to determine whether or not the conference you plan to attend would be considered a “professional conference.” If you feel that your conference does not meet these criteria but is still a “professional” conference for some reason, please emailcur@ku.edu.

  • The conference should be sponsored by a professional organization or academic institution.
  • A student participant must present in the same way that a professional participant would present.
  • The student participant must have confirmation that he/she will present at the conference.
  • Additionally, the research conducted must be associated with the University of Kansas and KU faculty.
